The Spirit of Rugby stimulus materials include suggested learning activities and related resources.

 

Stimulus materials

Rugby dot point Wallaby Standards. A video (2 mins) outlining the Wallabies' standards of behaviour, values and responsibilities. Students determine the values and standards underpinning their class or sporting team, and create a method for communicating these with others.

Rugby dot point Wallaby Anthem. The song (3.36mins) "A Number on My Back" by John Williamson, which is known as the Wallaby Anthem. Students explore the meaning of the song and attempt to write their own poem or song that reflects personal goals and dreams. 

Rugby dot point Player Online Diaries. Two examples of online diaries written by members of the Wallabies and Wallaroos focussing on topics such as teamwork and camaraderie. Students discuss the importance of documenting thoughts and feelings and begin a class journal or online diary.

Rugby dot point Australian Rugby Union Values. A 6-slide PowerPoint presentation outlining the corporate values of the Australian Rugby Union (ARU). Students discuss the ARU values and develop a presentation of one or more of their school values.

Rugby dot pointWallabies' Television Commercial. A 2005 TV commercial (1 minute) promoting the Wallabies' international Test season. Students explore themes such as pride, professionalism and dealing with nerves in role-play situations.

Rugby dot point 2005 Wallaby, John Roe speaks about values. A series of taped audio files of 2005 Wallaby, John Roe being interviewed about a range of values at the 2005 EdRugby Promoting Values in Sport Forums. Students compare their ideas with John Roe's and develop questions to interview another person.

Rugby dot point Spirit of Rugby Evaluation Form. A self-evaluation and peer-evaluation form. Students can evaluate their own and others' behaviours on and off the Rugby field to determine whether they uphold the Spirit of Rugby.

Rugby dot point Inspirational Rugby quotes and poems. A page of quotes and poems from Rugby writers and players including former Wallaby Captain, Michael Lynagh. Students explore their meaning and develop a class book of inspirational quotes and poems.
