South Africa’s Super Rugby teams have shown off the super hero jerseys they’ll be wearing in derby games this season.

The jerseys combine the colours of the four South African teams and the designs of some of Marvel’s most famous characters.

The Sharks have the Black Panther suit, the Lions will have Spiderman’s iconic webbed suit look, the Stormers have a Thor-inspired shirt and the Bulls will be donning Captain America outfits.

The first look at the jerseys for the South African public will come on February 3 in Cape Town, when the four sides will play in “Super Hero Sunday” trial matches ahead of the Super Rugby season openers two weeks later.

The super hero jerseys will also be worn throughout the year when the South African teams play each other in derbies. They’ll wear their traditional jerseys against international opposition.

In a release, SARU said "the jerseys are the result of a ground-breaking and unique collaboration between SA Rugby, DStv, SuperSport, Marvel and Vodacom."

⠀ ⠀ HERO-ON-HERO COMBAT HAS MOVED FROM THE SCREEN TO THE RUGBY FIELD⠀ ⠀ Get your Spider-Man suit ready - Marvel is coming to South Africa in a big way as a plethora of superheroes get ready to invade Cape Town on Sunday 3 February for #SuperHeroSunday.⠀ ⠀ This Vodacom Super Rugby season the Emirates Lions will become Spider-Man, arguably the most popular superhero of all, and just like the comic character, they will don an even more advanced Superhero costume.⠀ ⠀ On this day it will be the first time the teams will officially don the new-look jerseys, which will also be worn during other SA derbies throughout the Super Rugby season.⠀ ⠀ The Emirates Lions (Spider-Man) kick off proceedings at 14:00 against the Cell C Sharks (Black Panther) followed by the DHL Stormers (Thor) versus the Vodacom Bulls (Captain America).⠀ ⠀ The idea of our heroes fighting, sparks our imaginations, our rooting interests, and our emotional investment. Expectations are that the season’s first hit-out - powered by DStv, SuperSport, Marvel and Vodacom - will be fast and spectacular as teams try and establish solid early form.⠀ ⠀ Tickets, from R50 (or four from R150), are available at Computicket, while corporate hospitality can be arranged via buff.ly/2FrbU33⠀ ⠀ There will be no ticket sales at the stadium on match day.⠀ ⠀ Gates open at noon.⠀ ⠀ #LionsPride #SuperHeroSunday

The super hero-inspired jersey is not entirely new to Super Rugby.

The Melbourne Rebels wore a Superman jersey in 2015, and the Queensland Reds donned a Flash-inspired jersey in the same year.
