Australia's new Super 15 franchise the Melbourne Rebels have appointed one of the country's most experienced and successful sporting administrators, Brian Waldron, as Chief Executive.
Waldron departs his post as CEO of reigning NRL premiers Melbourne Storm to take up the role with the Rebels.
His six-year tenure with Storm saw them become Australia’s most successful rugby league club.
Waldron will commence his post with the Rebels prior to March 1, 2010.
Waldron’s twenty-year career in sport includes successful stints as Chief Executive of the AFL’s St Kilda Football Club and General Manager of Football Operations at Richmond Football Club.
Melbourne Rebels Chairman Harold Mitchell said the club was delighted with the appointment.
“Brian’s talents as an organisational leader and his ability to nurture and operate successful sporting entities at the highest level are well evidenced," Mitchell said.
“He is thoroughly committed to achieving success with the Rebels and to developing a team that embodies leadership and integrity both on and off the field.
“His appointment is a vital step toward ensuring our club makes an outstanding permanent contribution to Melbourne’s sporting culture.”
Waldron said he was excited by the prospect of leading Melbourne’s newest elite sporting team.
“The role with Melbourne Rebels is a rare opportunity to develop a successful high level sporting team from the ground up," Waldron said.
“The Rebels will represent Melbourne in the international arena and I am looking forward to working with Harold Mitchell and his team to build a club of which all Victorians and Australian rugby supporters will be proud.”
