Qantas Wallabies assistant coach Michael Foley will join the NSW Waratahs coaching staff for the 2009 season.

The former Test hooker will end a three-season stint with the national team – working on set piece technique and strategy – after the end-of-year Spring Tour.

He will take on a new role as Waratahs forwards mentor from January.

“I have enjoyed my time with the Wallabies immensely and there is still much to be done over the next few months,” Foley said.

“We are in the midst of a Tri Nations campaign and have a six-match tour to Hong Kong and Europe in November/December.

“Looking further ahead, what this opportunity with the Waratahs provides is an appealing opportunity to be at home more frequently.

“With four children, that’s very important to me and my family. The travel demands over the past three seasons have been extensive.”

ARU Managing Director and CEO John O’Neill said the Waratahs would benefit enormously from the expertise and experience Foley would bring to their coaching ranks next season.

“Michael’s contribution to the Wallabies over the past three years cannot be under-estimated,” Mr O’Neill said.

“I have admired his commitment and work ethic to the task of improving our set pieces.

“I’m equally sure the Waratahs will appreciate that same level of passion for improving the standard of forward play in Australian Rugby.

“While I am disappointed he is leaving the Wallabies, Michael moving to the Waratahs ensures he stays within the coaching system in this country.”

ARU High Performance Unit General Manager David Nucifora said there were no immediate plans to seek a replacement for Foley with the Wallabies next year.

“We’ll have several months after the Spring Tour to consider the make-up of the coaching staff for 2009 and beyond,” he said.

Wallabies Head Coach Robbie Deans congratulated Foley on his appointment and said there would be no problem with him continuing to work with the Wallabies until his current contract expires next March.

"Foles has accepted a position with the Waratahs which is great for him, gives him some certainty," Deans said.

"He's still contracted with us through 'til March next year and he could still be with us as yet unless he decides he doesn't want to be. That's in the future."
