Despite missing the first and last Tests of the 2004 season through injury, Stirling Mortlock started in 10 Tests in 2005 and scored five tries. Starting the season with a knee injury, Mortlock quickly found his feet, scored a double against the Pacific Islanders in Adelaide and then the Wallabies only try against New Zealand in the Tri Nations opener in Wellington.

His confrontational, physical approach paved the way for a solid 2004 season, and while missing out on the final Test of the year, with a depressed cheekbone, Mortlock remained prepared to regain the Number 13 jersey in 2005.

Captaining the Brumbies for the second year in 2005, Mortlock has led by example on the field, despite missing a couple of matches through injury, and was one of few regulars in the ACT backline last season.

Starting out as a winger at Test level in 2000, having toured Argentina with the Wallabies in 1997 before even playing a Super 12 match, Mortlock secured the Australian number 13 jersey at the 2003 Rugby World Cup where his 80 metre intercept try against the All Blacks in the Semi Final will be a lasting memory of the tournament for years to come.  His other great moment in history game in his debut season for the Wallabies when a last-second penalty goal from the sideline against South Africa in Durban in 2000 clinched Australia's first Tri Nations title.

Fast Fact

Stirling Mortlock's international season in 2000 is one of the greatest in Test history.  Having broken numerous records in his first seven Tests, he became the fastest Australian to reach 50 and 100 Test points; has scored the most points and highest number of penalties [16] by any Australian in his first five Tests and created history by becoming the first Australian to score 20 points or more in four consecutive Tests.
