Wallabies captain Harry Wilson admits he wasn't expecting the honour but is ready to lead his country out with pride against Argentina.

The 24-year-old backrower will become the 90th player to skipper the Wallabies as they take on Los Pumas in Buenos Aires.

It caps a stunning rise for Wilson, who was out of the squad in 2023 and missed the Wales Tests with a broken arm.

“It's a huge honour,” Wilson said to the media.

“It's something I didn't really expect, but I really want to grab it with both hands and just try and lead the boys well.

“I'm just really excited to go out there and just try and put on a good performance for the team.”

Wilson is one of the most popular players in Australian Rugby and his appointment led to well wishes from some of the greats of the game, including one of the finest Wallabies captains in history John Eales.

“ I've had so many nice messages from home. The family were over the moon and then hearing from Wallabies legends like John Eales, Paul McLean and co was awesome," he admits.

“…I just want to do everyone back home proud."

Wilson also has plenty of captaincy experience to call on for advice.

Scrumhalves Jake Gordon and Tate McDermott captain their respective state sides whilst replacement Allan Alaalatoa has captained the Wallabies on several occasions.

The likes of legendary prop James Slipper and Nic White have also held leadership positions within the Wallabies and Wilson was quick to pick their brains in the build-up.

“They've reached out to me, caught up with me most days and just really helped me through the week and made me feel a lot more comfortable in the role, which has been awesome," Wilson added.
