Western Force scrum-half Samantha Wood spoke after being crowned the side's 2024 Rebecca Clough medallist for his outstanding Super Rugby Women's campaign.

It's well past midnight and scrumhalf Samantha Wood is ready to call it a night as she prepares for the Western Force's trip to Japan until the caller ID Jo Yapp comes up on her phone.

"It's Jo Yapp, you have to pick it up," Wood said and smiled.

Watch the Wallaroos tackle South Africa live and exclusively on Stan Sport.

Wood has been rushed to South Africa straight into the side to face the hosts after a foot injury to Reds half Nat Wright.

The 21-year-old will come off the bench after making her debut in the Pacific Four series earlier in the year.

"It's just really exciting. The family were all in bed so I got to tell them in the morning which was really nice," Wood admits.

"You don't really want to get this opportunity from someone like 'Natty' going down but it's still very exciting and I'm going to make the most of it."

"I've been training and keeping up with the Wallaroos going into the last three camps so I feel like I'm pretty prepared going into this week."

Wood has dealt with her own injury issues, initially missing selection to deal with a back complaint.

It saw the scrumhalf head to Samoa with Australia A instead of South Africa and was focused on the Force's upcoming trip to Japan starting October 17.

"I had a couple of things going on with my back so just giving the time to rest up and not push it," Wood explained. "(Jo Yapp) wanted to make sure that I could be (healthy) long term instead of push me through but I feel like I've really done well over the last couple of months to put myself in a good spot.

"(Australia A) was more of an experience rather than a real focus Test match. We had a lot of young girls come in and it was great experience to learn a lot about the culture and play some good Rugby against a good side.

"...The Force coaches were emphasising that it's an opportunity to go to Japan but also if the girls stay ready and an opportunity like this comes, us girls are fully trained and our bodies are ready to fo.
