Wellington woes: Inside the All Blacks’ winless record at Sky Stadium

The All Blacks currently hold the two longest current unbeaten streaks at specific grounds, yet their worse comes minutes from their official training base in Wellington.

The Kiwis’ record at Eden Park is legendary, bringing up the half-century against England in July, which is only bested by their record at Murrayfield which spans 19 games and almost 90 years.

Yet that washed away as their struggles at Sky Stadium were heightened following a 38-30 defeat to Argentina.

Since 2010, the All Blacks have lost five times at home, four at the Wellington venue.

During this time, they've recorded two draws, including a 16-all tie against the Wallabies in 2020, the last time Australia played at the ground.

2018 was the last time they won at the ground, a 26-13 win over France that was all but decided in the opening minutes when French fullback Benjamin Fall took out Beauden Barrett in the air in the opening minute.

A year earlier, a red card to Sonny Bill Williams cruelled the Kiwis' hopes of taking down the British and Irish Lions, ending a 16-game winning streak at the ground that is just outside the top five for longest winning runs at a particular ground.

From here, it’s been a place of nightmares for the All Blacks.

The 2018 loss to the Springboks is considered one of the turning points for Rassie Erasmus and their run to back-to-back World Cups whilst four years later, a 32-22 defeat to Ireland signified a coming of age for the world number one side and NZ's first home series loss since 1994.

In between these games, they drew 16-all against South Africa (2019) and the Aussies (2020) before August’s stunning loss to Argentina, the most points they have conceded against Los Pumas.

"It hasn't been good enough," flanker and former captain Sam Cane when asked why the All Blacks have failed to win in the capital since 2018.

"We've touched on it this week. We're excited about the opportunity to sort that out.”

The Aussies can’t afford to buy into the Wellington record as they deal with their struggles in New Zealand.

The last Wallabies time to win in New Zealand was back in 2001, with the 2020 draw the closest they have come since after Reece Hodge’s penalty from halfway slammed into the post.

“I don’t read too much into that,” lock Lukhan Salakaia-Loto told reporters on Tuesday, one of the returning stars from that game in 2020.

“I think any team enjoys playing at home, and it’s the All Blacks in New Zealand, so it’s always going to be a tough match.

“History shows that whenever it’s been a tight contest in the first game, the second game always hasn’t gone our way. So we know that we’ve got to be better and we understand that.

“It’s not going to be easy. Sold-out crowd here in Wellington at Sky Stadium and NZ back home so it’ll be a close game.”
