Max Jorgensen Try from Round 3 of Super Rugby Pacific 2024

NSW Waratahs coach Darren Coleman's back-three rotation has continued for Friday's clash with the Hurricanes with exciting teenager Max Jorgensen left out of the squad.

Jorgensen will likely return to Shute Shield after his wasn't named in the 23 to travel to Wellington, with Mark Nawaqanitawase named at fullback.

Dylan Pietsch returns to the starting side after a strong performance with club side Randwick, joining good mate Triston Reilly on the wing.

“We’re on all our toes, no one is safe,” Reilly told reporters on Tuesday before the team was announced.

“We’ve all got to keep working hard. We’re all very close and learning off each other.”

It is one of three changes to the backline, with Will Harrison handed the start at flyhalf whilst Izaia Perese replaces Joey Walton (foot).

Harrison will start at flyhalf for the first time since June 2021, having spent 2022 as a fullback before his injury setbacks.

This sees Tane Edmed move to the bench along with debutant and former Fijian Rugby League international Vuate Karawalevu.

"This week provides an opportunity for Will to take control of the team and steer them around from the opening whistle," Coleman said. "I'm highly interested to see how this plays out.

"In keeping with the back three rotation of late, Max will rotate out of the side, enabling Dylan Pietsch to come back into the starting side. Dylan was great for Randwick last week and deserves his spot.

"We always wanted to give Vuate an opportunity at some stage this year. He's been a committed and hard-working member of the squad and this is a good opportunity to see his attributes under the pressure of Super Rugby."

In the forwards, Ned Hanigan (neck) and Jed Holloway (concussion) are out, leading to Fergus Lee-Warner and Hunter Ward coming into the starting side.

Miles Amatosero and Charlie Gamble will come off the bench as they manage injuries, whilst Hayden Thompson-Stringer's return offsets the loss of Tom Ross.

"Miles and Charlie move to the bench due to a disrupted training week with some niggling injuries which opens the door for Hunter Ward and Fergus Lee-Warner," Coleman added.

"Hunter is a combative and industrious number seven who did well with his opportunity against the Blues last year and has been one of the top performers in the Shute Shield this season."

WARATAHS (1-15): Hayden Thompson-Stringer, Julian Heaven, Harry Johnson-Holmes, Hugh Sinclair, Fergus Lee-Warner, Lachlan Swinton, Hunter Ward, Langi Gleeson, Jake Gordon (c), Will Harrison, Dylan Pietsch, Lalakai Foketi, Joey Walton, Triston Reilly, Mark Nawaqanitawase

RESERVES: Jay Fonokalafi, Lewis Ponini, Brad Amituanai, Miles Amatosero, Charlie Gamble, Jack Grant, Tane Edmed, Vuate Karawalevu
