Toulon's Australian back and Wallabies sensation Drew Mitchell is to undergo an operation on a groin injury today.

The French giants announced the news, adding that they hoped the 70-times capped Wallaby would return to fitness for the start of next season.

Mitchell, 32, also announced the operation through Twitter, saying he would be back in three months, having not played since Toulon's defeat by Clermont on April 3.

Toulon, however, will welcome back Wales full-back Leigh Halfpenny for the Top 14 play-offs.

The timeline means that Mitchell will be in line to return just in time for the second Bledisloe Cup match, in Wellington on August 27, as well as the remainder of the Rugby Championship.

Mitchell has previously signalled his intent to return to Wallabies duty in 2016, willing to put his hand up for the Rugby Championship matches, which fall around the beginning of the Top 14 season.
