Reds not ref lost that game, says Stiles

Los Jaguares made the most of their chances running two tries while the Queensland Reds had 13 men on the field and it proved to be the difference.

Nick Stiles has refused to blame refereeing for his team's fourth straight loss, focusing on the Reds' feeble defensive effort and inability to capitalise on attacking opportunities.

Stiles was fuming post match when he spoke to RUGBY.com.au, but said he would leave the commentary regarding Mike Fraser's refereeing to others.

The simple fact remains, however, that the Reds conceded two of the Jaguares' three tries while Eto Nabuli and Kane Douglas were in the sin bin for a pair of ridiculous yellow cards.

That was, in part, due to an extremely poor showing on the defensive side of the ball for all of the first half but there are very few teams that could cope with the Jaguares' free flowing style of play with 13 men.

"I gave the boys a spray at half-time for our defensive performance," Stiles said.

"It killed us in that first half.

"We had 'Bobby' (James Tuttle) putting up some good box kicks and every time they would come down with it, we would miss our tackles.

"There were two or three that stuck out to me which allowed them to get into their game straight away.

"If we make those tackles then they've got to get back into some structured play which isn't how they like to do things."

Stiles was similarly displeased with his team's attacking effort, which played into the hands of the Jaguares' quick line speed in defence.

"We talked about how in the first four games they like to push up with their line speed so we needed to get over the gain line with some big carries," Stiles said.

"What we tended to do was try and go around the outside."

Stiles highlighted the scrum and performances of Markus Vanzati, Taniela Tupou, Samu Kerevi and Karmichael Hunt as positives for Queensland to take forward, as they turn their attention to the high-flying Hurricanes at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite the 1-4 record, Stiles is not panicking.

"The reality of the way the competition works is that we are only one win away from getting back towards the top of the Australian Conference.

"If you include next week, we will have only played one conference game out of our first six (matches).

"Don't get me wrong, we have to get better, we have to be far better than we were here, but there are still carrots there waiting for us if we can get our act together."
