Wallabies coach Michael Cheika wants returning back Matt Toomua involved with the national side as soon as possible after the 28-year-old committed to an Australian comeback.

Toomua signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Rebels and Rugby AU to return to Australia, making him available for Wallabies duty immediately.

Due to international window regulations, Toomua is not allowed to train with the squad the week leading into the first Bledisloe but he is available to play in that first Test on Saturday August 18.

Cheika said he would be looking to integrate Toomua into the side seamlessly when he officially joins the camp.

“Now that he's been signed to play back here it opens up a new scope for us around our options in the playmaking section of the field,” he said.

“He's obviously got good track record with Australia. He played in the World Cup final in 2015 (and then in 2016).

“The team's changed a lot since then.

“I'll have a talk to him soon enough and get him back in as quickly as we can and see how he goes.”

The 28-year-old might not be available for selection in the trial but there will be plenty of opportunities for players on both sides to impress Cheika.

A host of the Super Rugby Selection players are capped Wallabies or have been part of squads and the Wallabies coach said he wanted players to make their presences felt.

"You want lads to go out there and enjoy themselves as well, that goes hand in hand with playing the best and believing you can play well.

"So, that's going to be a mix of what we see tomorrow night can change some opinions maybe or some opinions we have right now as opposed to looking to confirm anything or any of that in our heads.

"We're looking for guys to change opionins and make us say, 'Yes this guy has to play,' and for that matter from both teams."

Outside centre is a spot still up for grabs in the Wallabies opening Bledisloe line up and Reece Hodge will have first crack on Friday but he won't be the only player to be tried in that spot.

Cheika all but ruled out a switch for Israel Folau to the 13 jersey but there are a number of other options in the mix.

"I think I've been pretty clear that I  like Israel at fullback," he said.

"If he did anything up there it's double drop in, some in attack, some in defence.

"We're going to see a few of the suspects on Friday night. Hodge will get some time there, might even let Jordan Petaia have a bit of time there.

"You might even see one of the wingers have a go in there or a Sefa Naivalu but not just go in there to fill a spot.

"You've got to go in there and arrive at the standards and do your job in that position really well. Once we get (Curtis) Rona and Israel back next week, we'll have a look at those guys and make some decisions once we're up in Cessnock."

Hamish Stewart. Photo: Rugby AUReds flyhalf Hamish Stwart has been thrown into the playmaking cauldron and Cheika hopes the 20-year-old can embrace the challenge.

Stewart has become a Reds regular in 2018 and though he is not quite in the Test frame yet, Cheika has thrown him the playmaking reins for Friday night.

“I still think he's got a fair way to go around understanding the speed of the game and bringing his talents to that level and Friday night will be a chance for him to experience that with all different players for the first time ever,” he said.

"The pace will go up and his opportunity will come, we'll try to put him in the best position possible to make hay of that opportunity he gets on Friday.

“What we can do is give some hints and tips and give him a bit of a framework to go through but at the end of the day these things are usually up to the player.

“If I look at a guy like Brandon (Paenga-Amosa) who only started playing Super Rugby this year and he's been starting international rugby in the June Series, it can happen that quickly if you're up for it.

“You can take them a certain distance but they've got to make the jump and take the rest.”

The Wallabies take on a Super Rugby Selection in a pre-Bledisloe trial on Friday night at Leichhardt Oval, kicking off at 6:45pm AEST, with free entry. The match will be streamed LIVE on RUGBY.com.au.
