Wallabies coach Michael Cheika and the selectors have gone back to the future, naming Michael Hooper and David Pocock to start against Fiji in Saturday's World Cup opener.

Former NRL star Semi Radradra has been named on the wing for Fiji in their opening Rugby World Cup clash against Australia.

The shift is somewhat of a surprise selection with the expectation being that he would be picked at 13, where he has played much of his international rugby.

Radradra made his Test debut for Fiji last year and has played six Tests since, also playing a role with the Fijian Sevens in the World Series.

Ben Volavola will play at 10 for the Fijians, with breakout NRC star, Alivereti Veitokani, now playing in England, set to come off the bench.

Fiji coach John McKee said the side was the best available to take on the Wallabies, with the winner of the clash set to put themselves in the box seat for a quarter-final spot.

"We have picked the best team we can to play Australia. The players won their places through their training and form," he aid..

"Only two players weren’t considered for fitness reasons -  Jale Vatubua and Semi Kunatani."

"We know Australia are a very good team and present a big challenge for us but, because of our preparation, I know that our team is mentally and physically ready for that challenge."

The Wallabies have named their team for the clash as well, with the reunion of David Pocock and Michael Hooper confirmed and Christian Lealiifano and Nic White to play in the halves.

Australia take on Fiji on Saturday September 21 at the Sapporo Dome, kicking off at 1:45pm local, 2:45pm AEST, LIVE on Foxtel, Network Ten and via RUGBY.com.au RADIO.
