Rebels prop Jermaine Ainsley is heading across the ditch in 2021 after signing with the Highlanders.

Ainsley is off contract at the end of the season and the Otago side announced his addition on Monday amid a period of uncertainty in Australian rugby.

The 24-year-old grew up in the Otago area, before moving to Perth and ultimately making his Super Rugby debut with the Western Force.

He was one of a host of players who moved from the Force to the Rebels in 2018 after the WA club was cut from the Super Rugby competition.

Ainsley was on the fringes of the Wallabies squad, making his Test debut in 2018 against Ireland, but this move will make him unable to add any more to his three caps in the immediate future.

Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger said he was confident Ainsley would be a valuable addition to the Highlanders outfit.

"Even though Jermaine is only 24 he already has a wealth of experience with over 50 games Super Rugby games and also some exposure at test level," he said.

"The fact that he has a strong link with our region and club history makes it all the better."

Ainsley said he was looking forward to returning to New Zealand.

"I’m very excited to be coming home and be surrounded by family. Can’t wait to play  Super Rugby in New Zealand it’s a dream come true.”

Australia's players will return to the field in just under three weeks' time in the Super Rugby AU competition.

The Rebels open their campaign against the Brumbies on Saturday July 4 at GIO Stadium.

The Rebels take on the Brumbies at GIO Stadium on Saturday July 4, kicking off at 7:15pm AEST, LIVE on Foxtel, Foxtel Now and via Kayo Sports.
