2021 Aon Uni 7s - National Finals Round 2, Day 1 Bond University, Gold Coast

Round 1

In last round's Grand Final replay between Bond and Sydney Uni battled it out in a tight match. Early in the second half Bond edged in front after two huge hits from Diaz Seumanutafa and Maddison Levi caused a turnover, which Bond capitalised on. It was a free-flowing game with plenty of entertaining tries. Sophie Bell closed out the game with a try on full-time. FT 24-12

In a New South Wales grudge match, the Newcastle side took on a UTS side featuring Aussie sevens star Chole Dalton on the Olympic comeback trail. Newcastle came out strong with a structured game plan that was able to negate the speed of UTS. After a frantic play right on the whistle, UTS was able to level the scores. FT 15-15

In a bruising encounter between Griffith and UQ, tries were hard-fought and the defence had plenty of feeling in it. In the end, it was the UQ team who broke the deadlock following a great interchange of play between Bella Nasser and Giv Robinson. FT 14-10

Round 2

To kick-off round 2, Bond continued their dominance in the tournament, running up a comprehensive score against Newcastle. The Seahorses struggled to put phases together and build any continuity. FT 36-0

In a scrappy affair, the rush defence from UTS stifled UQ's play, with the game descending into an arm-wrestle. UTS was able to break away in the second half against a tiring UQ. FT 17-5

Sydney Uni and Griffith put on a show to close out the round. The match featured hard-hitting defence, great interchange of play and long-range scoring efforts, with Sydney Uni young gun Bridget Clark streaking away for the match-winner. FT 19-17

Round 3

In the blockbuster battle between Bond and UQ, there was some heavy contact early. UQ packed on the points to cause a huge upset. Returning from injury, "the Mayor of Ipswich" Melita Hicks scored on full-time for an important win to UQ. FT 27-7

The rivalry between Sydney Uni and UTS continued in a tight match, with both teams keeping it tight in the first half. UTS was able to shut down the Lionesses potent attack, continuing their good form. FT 17-5

In the final game of the day, Newcastle went up against Griffith University. It was all one-way traffic for Griffith to start the game. Newcastle was able to front up in the second half but couldn't get on the scoreboard. Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea was impressive in her return from injury and will be one to follow. FT 31-0

Tune in tomorrow to follow along.
