Atasi Lafai, a prominent lock for the NSW Waratahs Women and the Australian Wallaroos, has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 season due to an Anterior Cruciate ligament (ACL), Medial collateral ligament (MCL) and Lateral Meniscus injury.
The injury occurred during a trial match against NSW Pasifica, dealing a significant blow to her team and fans.
This setback adds to Lafai's history of overcoming severe injuries throughout her career. She has previously endured two ACL injuries, a broken collarbone, a broken ankle, a broken foot, a broken finger and a neck issue that threatened to end her playing days.
Despite these challenges, Lafai's resilience has been evident. In April 2024, she overcame a freak eye injury to be named player of the Super Rugby Women's Grand Final. She was later honoured as the Rugby Union Players' Association (RUPA) Player of the Year.
Reflecting on her past injuries, she once stated, "I thought I'd never play again." Her return to the field after a serious neck and ankle injury scare in 2023 was a testament to her determination and love for the game.
The Waratahs and the broader rugby community are rallying behind Lafai during this challenging time, expressing confidence in her ability to overcome this latest obstacle.
Fans and teammates alike are hopeful for her full recovery and eagerly anticipate her return to the field.
