Argentina has defeated Australia 29-19 in their opening match of the Tokyo 2020 Rugby Sevens.

After a slow start, Australia would mount an incredible comeback, scoring 19 straight points to set up a grandstand finish.

However, Argentina would prove too strong as they defeated the Aussies, repeating their heroics from Rio five years ago.

In their first match of the tournament, Australia got off to a nightmare start as they struggled to control the restarts and possession.

Argentina would score first through Lucio Cinti as they continued to attack the Australian line, who failed to control the ball.

They would extend the lead after five minutes with Matias Osadczuk touching down after some sloppy defence.

With Australia failing to secure the ball at kick-off time, this allowed 'Los Pumas' to control territory, not allowing Tim Walsh's men into their half for the first seven minutes of the game.

Two late tries to Santiago Mare and Ignacio Mendy pushed their lead out to 24-0, leaving the Aussies shell-shocked.

They would eventually fight back into the contest as Josh Turner changed the game.

Turner would beat three to score the first try for the Aussies, making it a double just minutes later.

Former Wallaby Samu Kerevi would make an instant impact off the bench as Australia scored 19 straight points to reduce the margin to seven.

With time running out, Australia would push for the win of the resulting kick-off.

However, the loose ball would favour Argentina as Lautaro Bazan Velez sprinted away to secure the 29-19 win and the first upset of the tournament.

Australia will return to the field at 7:00 pm (AEST) against the Republic of Korea, who was dominated by New Zealand 52-5.
