Australia women's side have cruised to a 43-0 win over Spain to end day one on a high note.

It was the perfect end to the day after the men went down in a frustrating 10-7 defeat to South Africa.

For Tim Walsh’s side, it was the Maddison Levi show as the 22-year-old pieced apart Spain in the first half

Levi was dominant from her opening touch as she torched the Spanish defence, scoring her first after two minutes.

The flyer made it a double as Faith Nathan turned provider with the forced errors and try assist to her fellow try-scoring freak. The hat trick was completed before the break as the sisters combined for a 15-0 lead at halftime.

Nathan got a try of her own to start the second half after sprinting around the defence from a scrum, with Bella Nasser sealing the win with four minutes to go. Young guns Ruby Nicholas and Mackenzie Davis capped off the perfect performance with tries

"Hot, wet, tiring," Nathan said, summing up day one. "The team did very well to stay composed with whatever the weather was so we just adapted to get the two wins,

"We were all just working for one another even though the score was big and we protected the sisterhood."

Meanwhile, the men face a must-win game against the USA on day two after they were left to rue costly mistakes in a 10-7 defeat to South Africa,

South Africa dominated the first half with the Aussies, making over 80% of the carries in the opening five minutes. However, the hosts’ defence held strong, only conceding a Donovan Dan try in the corner.

Dewald Human looked certain to score before bombing the try, thanks to the Jayden Blake pressure. This sparked the Australians and they struck with one of their few touches of the half via James Turner for a remarkable 7-5 lead at the break.

It was a tense second half as the Blitzboks punished a mistake from Maurice Longbottom to re-take the lead with three minutes left in the game.

Australia tried to push for a winner but failed to find touch from the penalty, allowing the South Africans to close out the game.

It leaves the Australians needing victory over the Americans to qualify for the knockout stages and for results to go their way.

“It’s tough. We came in with a lot of stuff to work on and we’re ticking two or three boxes each time but never all of them,” young gun Sid Harvey said.

“It hurts in Sevens to lose in extra time and then by three points but those two or three mistakes in a row, that’s where we struggled in the game and we’ve got to correct them and hope results go our way.”
