Australia's men's side has failed to register a win over their Olympics counterparts New Zealand and Fiji at the Oceania Sevens tournament but there were lessons to be learned.

With one game remaining in the tournament, the Aussies will face the Oceania selection to cap off a vital pre-Olympics hit-out.

The Aussie's started strongly against New Zealand on day three, scoring off the kick-off through Samu Kerevi but were immediately punished for ill discipline.

Pama Fou was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle early in the first half and when William Warbrick scored for New Zealand shortly before halftime the Kiwis were never headed, closing out a 17-5 win.

Australia coach Tim Walsh said he would have like to register a few wins before the Olympics, but the losses have been a learning curve for his team.

"You're never losing you're learning," he told AAP.

"From a selection point of view, game time against some great teams, we didn't get the win(s), we came close and we'll save it for the Olympics."

Walsh said the three-day tournament in Townsville had been pivotal in addressing certain issues for his team and finalising selections.

"For us to have this tournament and opportunity... is another piece of the puzzle towards Tokyo," he said.

"We're very, very fortunate and I think every team here at this tournament has got a huge benefit from it."

Discipline will be a particular focus in the men's medal aspirations next month, with sin bins shifting momentum in their weekend fixtures.

Before their final game of the weekend, Walsh said he's putting the finishing touches on who will be selected in the 12 for Tokyo.

"We're just about there but we've got a pretty heavy toll at the moment in sometimes the one position," he said.

"We've played a lot of footy over the weekend, so we have to be pretty strategic in how we keep an eye on the bigger picture being Tokyo."
