Australia's Men Sevens delivered a sudden-death victory as they defeated the USA 19-12 to advance to the quarter-finals at Perth SVNS.

James Turner was the hero, setting up the first and scoring the third to ensure they didn’t rely on other results to advance.

It books them into the quarter-finals against Olympic gold medalists France (6:41 pm local time) after they topped their pool.

“It’s a pretty awesome feeling,” Turner said post-match.

“I was a bit nervous there with 40 seconds left when we didn’t have the ball but our defence has been benchmark this week.

“We give our all for each other and we’re really proud of the boys.

The Australians were forced to work early after the Americans raced the length of the field to score through Aaron Cummins.

Turner set up the opening try for the hosts, switching back inside to put Michael Icely in enough space for the response.

Liam Barry's side extended their lead seconds later when a dropped kickoff allowed Henry Hutchison to pounce and roll his way over the line.

The Americans reduced the lead at the break when a great crossfield kick put Jack Wendling over for the try.

The second half was an error-filled affair in the sweltering conditions as neither side could put together multiple phases.

It took some great defence with a minute to go to give Australia the chance to close out the game.

Josh Turner sliced through the defence, allowing Sid Harvey to draw two defenders for James Turner to score the game-sealer.

The seven-point win was enough to secure their spot in the quarter-finals and a date with the Olympic champions.

“It’s a big win for us to get into the quarter-finals,” Turner added

“It was tough at the start to lose in extra time (to Argentina) and by three points (to South Africa) but that win is big and now we have our tails up going into the quarters.
