Melbourne Rebels flyhalf Carter Gordon is ready to make good use of his Wallabies call-up as he looks to parlay his strong form into a dream Test debut.

Gordon has been the form playmaker from the Australian sides in 2023 and was recognised with selection in Eddie Jones' first training squad.

He admits the nerves didn't hit until he saw his name on the squad list, although recognised it was the first step in his eventual dream to pull on the gold jersey.

“It was pretty surprising and surreal. You always dream of moments like that," Gordon told Rebels Media.

“It was weird, I was more nervous after my name came out. Mum and Dad were on the phone and they were so happy for me.

“It’s a pretty cool experience and I really enjoyed it, probably the whole day I was on a high.

“Even now thinking about it, I want to say it’s a dream come true but it’s more of a step closer in that direction.”

Gordon has stepped up as a key leader for the Rebels, feeling more comfortable in his third season of Super Rugby.

This coupled with the departure of Matt To'omua has forced the 22-year-old to demand more for himself and his players.

“I just wanted to work as hard as I could to put myself in a good position," he reflected.

“It’s been a big step up for me getting more involved in the team and the meetings, talking to the boys about what I want from them and what they want from me.

“I think I’ve developed a bit more trust within the boys. I’ve been here for a few years now and have gotten to know everyone really well and connect.

“The hunger has always been there, it’s just important now to maintain that workload and not get complacent now I’ve played a couple of good games."

Gordon will have plenty of familiar faces, with six Rebels included in the 33-player squad, along with the likes of Matt Philip and Rob Leota in the rehab/injured group.

“It’s awesome for the club,” he added.

“All the boys are so stoked for them and a lot of them have been playing really well this year. Guys like ‘Hodgey’ have played 50 games for the Wallabies, he’s always been great for the Rebels and he’s been helping me a bit this year.

“To be named in there with him is pretty cool.”
