The Queensland Reds have consolidated their strength at halfback with the re-signing of Sunshine Coast product Louis Werchon for 2026.
Werchon, 22, has inked a new deal with the Queensland Rugby Union to remain at the Reds for his third season.
The blond-haired halfback has played 11 times for the Reds since his debut against the Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan in late 2022.
“I’m definitely really excited to have my future locked in. I love playing footy and I love the enjoyment with the playing group when the Queensland jersey means so much,” Werchon said.
“I feel the extra maturity I’ve gained from the past two years at the Reds is the biggest part of my improvement.
“(Backs and defence coach) Brad Davis has been a big part of that. He can come on fiery but he gets through to players. For me, improving my defence has been a real gain in the good learning environment we have at the Reds.”
Werchon is a major beneficiary of the Reds International Program with outings against Wales, Tonga, Irish club Ulster and the Wild Knights (three times) building his skills on top of five Super Rugby Pacific appearances.
He has played this season against the Crusaders and Highlanders as back-up to Tate McDermott and Kalani Thomas.
Reds head coach Les Kiss said he was delighted to have Werchon as part of the future at the Reds.
“I’m absolutely rapt that Louis has chosen to continue developing his qualities as a No.9 at the Reds,” Kiss said.
“His skills match the way we play here and he’s driven to get better every day. I’ve no doubt we will see a lot more of him in the Reds jersey.
“He has the right attitude and mindset around the squad and he’s a valued member in the locker room.”
Werchon is a product of Sunshine Coast Grammar School, the alma mater he shares with McDermott.
Watching McDermott play his 100th game for the Reds at Suncorp Stadium last weekend left a mark on a Werchon.
“You see Tate get to 100 and you want to do it too,” Werchon said.
“Tate and Kalani are two of my best mates in the squad and the healthy competition between us all helps each of us. We do ‘extras’ together at training and I know I’m grateful for the advice that’s passed on.”
Werchon said there was a shared excitement in the squad with the Reds to play the champion Blues in a major match on Anzac Day at Suncorp Stadium.
“Everyone is up for that game against the reigning champions. It was a great game last year between the teams and we expect the same next week,” Werchon said.
