However, they never seemed to recover from Connor Vest's yellow card, which invited the Hurricanes back into the contest.

Doubles to Tyrel Lomax and Bailyn Sullivan proved crucial as Jason Holland's men remained composed and pulled off the comeback victory.

Looking to avenge last year’s horror start to Trans-Tasman, the Reds came out with a purpose to match the Hurricanes’ line speed as they controlled the first half.

The hosts struggled with discipline to start the game as they saw two players sent for ten with Bailyn Sullivan and Pouri Rakete-Stonesyellow carded for dangerous tackles.

With Hunter Paisami proving a nightmare to stop, the centre broke the game open with a brutal run as Hamish Stewart finished off a deft offload from Taniela Tupou.

The dominant start was capped off with a great effort by the forwards to convert the rolling maul from close, Fraser McReight the benefactor as they took the 17-0 lead.

It took a fortuitous piece of broken play for the Hurricanes to get back into the contest as Sullivan ran 60 metres untouched.

The yellow carding of Connor Vest before the break provided the perfect opportunity to reduce the margin to three points for Jason Holland’s men as Tyrel Lomax crashed over the line.

With Vest still on the sidelines, Lomax dives over for his second as the Reds looked shell-shocked.

Whilst Fraser McReight and Harry Wilson tried to inspire them into the match, the Hurricanes kept building pressure and points as the boot of Barrett extended the lead.

Sullivan continues his redemption for his dangerous tackle as he latched onto a Garden-Bachop grubber to seal the victory.
