The Reds hosted the Super W newcomers, the Fijiana Drua at Suncorp Stadium.

With so many players and clubs doing media each day, it can be hard to keep on top of a lot of the stories coming out.

Rugby is filled with them across all levels of the game and whilst most are covered through some form of media, there are others that might have slipped off the radar.

Spain salutes in RWC Qualifier

Spain have qualified for the 2023 Rugby World Cup after an emotional victory over Portugal.

With more than 6,000 fans at the Complutense University, hooker Marco Pinto spearheaded the Spanish attack with two first-half tries as they secured a 33-28 win.

It’s just the second time they have qualified for the global showpiece tournament, dedicating the win to lock Kawa Leauma, who tragically passed away in December.

"It's been a long journey and a very tough qualification process," said Spain head coach Santiago Santos.

"We lost our first three games and after that, we have won six in a row.

"The performance of the team was amazing and we are very excited to be going to the Rugby World Cup."

They will line up in Pool B alongside defending champions South Africa, Ireland, Scotland and the Asia / Pacific 1 qualifier.

Sweet 16 for Su'a

Malaela Su’a is living the dream of every 16-year-old.

The Reds centre was thrust into the limelight last weekend, making her Super Rugby debut in front of friends and family at Suncorp Stadium.

"When I first made it and got named in the team, I was so excited and nervous at first,” she said.

“I was thinking in my head ‘I can’t believe I’m running out on the field playing in front of friends and family on TV’. It was a good experience, I loved it and it was a lot of fun.

“I’ve dreamed about it since I was a little girl and when I ran out onto Suncorp and I saw my family and friends cheering me on, it was a dream come true. Playing at Suncorp and representing Queensland was one of the best moments in my life."

Balancing school and the rigours of Super W, Su'a praised the support of those closest to her, even if they are starting to hassle her for autographs.

“My family were the biggest hype crew and they already know that. My friends (at school) were saying congrats, joking around asking for my autograph,” she said with a smile.

Su’a has once again been named in the centres, given the difficult job of shutting down Brumbies powerhouse Siokapesi Palu.

Stats to stun

With Rugby Australia confirming a partnership with Sportable, there has never been a time where stats have been more rich and available to clubs, coaches and fans.

After it was launched over the weekend, take a look at some of the more interesting and unique stats heading into round five, courtesy of Opta.

  • Friday’s top of the table clash will be a battle of the line out attacks. The Brumbies (14) and Reds (8) are the top two teams in regards to scoring tries from possessions starting at line out time.
  • From the Reds, watch the kick attack. They currently have three try assists from the boot, more than the rest of the teams combined.
  • As for the Brumbies, they remain the most lethal team with ball in hand, averaging the most tries (5) in the competition.
  • The Western Force will be out to end their dry streak in NSW, only winning one of their last seven. This doesn’t provide a fair indication of their games though, with six of those defeats being single-digit.
  • Meanwhile, the Rebels will need to be extra careful when it comes to their turnover rate. No team concedes more (15.8), with the Waratahs the second-best in the comp at creating them (6.5).
  • Whilst their defence has been the main talking point, it’s the Waratahs' ball security that has flown under the radar, conceding the least in the competition (11.5). They have also made the least tackles (121.3) on average whilst missing the second least (13)
Porecki poised for return

Waratahs hooker Dave Porecki is raring to go after a nasty infection saw him sidelined for the Force victory.

Porecki was one of several late withdrawals for the hosts, citing a groin injury.

The hooker revealed he was forced under the knife mid-week to clean up what turned out to be an infection, narrowly missing out on being fit.

“It wasn’t the most ideal week last week, ended up getting an infection in a place you shouldn’t get infections,” he told reporters.

“It just got worse and worse through the week so I ended up going under and getting it sorted by a surgeon.

“I was in a race to get right for captain’s run but couldn’t get it done. I just couldn’t run. Luckily it turned a corner over the weekend so I’m feeling a lot better.”

Social media post of the week

Sevens star Maddison Levi left with her own special souvenir during their trip to the USA.

Levi and the Sevens side were in camp in California last weekend, taking part in a training event and a series of exhibitions against the USA.

In a brutal affair, the cross-code star was left with a deep cut after a nasty collision, leaving a nasty scar for the 19-year-old.

For the record, the Aussies swept their American counterparts 14-5, 41-0, 31-5 and 15-0 as they ramp up preparations ahead of a blockbuster season.
