Jeffery Toomaga Allen, making his way back from a knee injury, shared a positive update on his recovery, saying, "Coming along well, I’m healing up quite good, I’m ahead of schedule which is nice. Hopefully, I can hit the ground running for round 3 of Super Rugby."
This early return, following the team’s bye and the opening round against Moana Pasifika, will surely give Queensland an added boost as they aim for the top.
Toomaga Allen gave some insight into the international 2024 matches played, particularly games against nations like Wales and Tonga, noting it has given the squad a unique sense of perspective - "It’s great for the development of the game."
From games in Tonga to those in Japan, these overseas matches have strengthened the Reds' understanding of different playing styles, ultimately helping to raise their overall game.
In the mix of these international tours and experiences is head coach Les Kiss, whose leadership has been crucial in driving the Reds' success.
“Les is really big on connection,” Toomaga Allen said.
“He just really cares about the person—people first, rugby players second. That’s what makes him one of a kind.” This focus on building relationships and creating a supportive environment has played a pivotal role in fostering unity within the squad.
However, it's not just about the players who have been there for years. The competition at the Reds has been fierce, particularly in the forward pack.
The introduction of promising young players like Trevor King and Zane Nonggorr, alongside the established stars, has sparked a healthy rivalry.
"There’s lots of good players, the young bucks coming through," Toomaga Allen noted, pointing out how the presence of players like King and Nonggorr is driving everyone to perform at their best.
“I think just trying to keep them at bay but also give them enough fire under the belly to just fight for the position,” he added, acknowledging the importance of both mentorship and competition.
This infusion of youth, combined with seasoned experience, is a critical ingredient as the Reds look to build on their 2024 campaign. Last year’s notable wins, particularly against powerhouse teams like the Crusaders in Christchurch, have instilled a new belief in the squad.
"I think initially the big thing about it was making sure we played a brand of rugby that Queensland loved, like Queenslanders wanted to be a part of," Toomaga Allen said.
This commitment to a high-energy, attacking style of play became a hallmark of their game last season, and with the confidence from those wins, the Reds are poised to build on it.
With the introduction of high-quality players from both Melbourne and the local club level, the Reds now possess an even stronger lineup.
The optimism is clear: "We just have to click in, and hopefully this tour helps that," the All Black said.
The Reds know that consistency and cohesion are key to converting potential into silverware. The belief within the squad is palpable, with many convinced that this could be the year that the Super Rugby title finally returns home to Queensland.
With their mix of experienced leadership, fresh talent, and an ever-growing confidence in their game, the Queensland Reds are undoubtedly one of the teams to watch as the 2025 Super Rugby season unfolds.
For fans and players alike, the belief is strong: the best is yet to come.
