Queensland Reds lock Angus Blyth has been handed a three-match ban following last Saturday's defeat to the Brumbies.

Blyth was red-carded in the first half during Friday's 52-24 defeat after a nasty tackle on Corey Toole.

Toole was looking to put a bomb up, only for the second rower to collect him in the head, leaving the speedster dazed and struggling for balance.

Blyth was yellow-carded initially, upgraded almost instantly to a red card under Super Rugby Pacific's new rules regarding foul play.

SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee ruled it was a mid-range offence, with Blyth's early guilty plea reducing the charge from six weeks to three.

"Having conducted a detailed review of all the available evidence, including all camera angles and additional evidence, including submissions from the player and his legal representative, Mark Martin KC, the Foul Play Review Committee upheld the Red Card under Law 9.13," Foul Play Review Committee Chairman Michael Heron said in a statement.

"With respect to sanction the Foul Play Review Committee considered the act of foul play was reckless, direct head contact was made and with high force. The Committee found it was not deliberate and after considering all relevant factors decided the foul play merited a mid-range entry point of 6 weeks.

"However, taking into account mitigating factors including the Player's clean judicial record and his acceptance of guilt at the first available opportunity, the Foul Play Review Committee reduced the suspension to 3 weeks.

"The player is therefore suspended for 3 weeks, up to and including 6 May 2023.”

Blyth will miss their trip to Samoa for Friday's clash with Moana Pasifika along with matches against the Western Force and NSW Waratahs.

The 25-year-old had only just returned from an ankle injury, featuring in his first start of 2023.

It leaves Brad Thorn scrambling for cover, with Luke Jones still dealing with a neck complaint.

He will be boosted by the return of prop Sef Fa'agase from his own suspension after being cited following their win over the Fijian Drua.
