The Australian Steelers have qualified for the semi-finals of the Wheelchair Rugby despite a four-point defeat to Japan.
The defending gold medalist's fate was sealed before they took to Yoyogi National Stadium when France defeat Denmark.
This left the three teams tied for second, with Australia winning the tie-breaker due to a better points difference in their matches against the two nations.
With their path sealed, the Aussies looked to gain a matter of revenge against Japan, who defeated the Steelers in the World Championships in 2019 on home soil.
However, the host nation, who came in full of momentum after their nine-point win over Denmark, were eager to claim top spot in Pool A as they retained a one-point lead into the quarter-time break.
They would extend the lead heading into half-time to two points as their defensive pressure paid off.
Whilst Australian captain Ryley Batt, who ended with 30 tries, looked to inspire the comeback, the Japanese remained strong as they capitalised on multiple mistakes to control the second half.
Batt would struggle with chair issues as the Japanese took command in the fourth quarter, closing out the game 57-54.
Australia will face either the United States or Great Britain in Saturday's semis, with the two teams set to face off Friday night to claim Pool B.
