The Hurricanes and Brumbies face off in a top-four clash in Wellington

Wallabies captain James Slipper is optimistic he will remain at the Brumbies as he ponders his future.

Slipper is one of few Wallabies yet to sign a deal beyond 2023 ahead of the World Cup, alongside Brumbies teammate Nic White and former Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper.

The 33-year-old has turned around his career since arriving at the Brumbies in 2019 and was eager to remain in the nation's capital as they prepare to face the Melbourne Rebels on Sunday at AAMI Park.

“I’ve always said I’d like to stay,” Slipper told reporters.

“It’s something that has been working along behind the scenes but I’ve always loved my time in Canberra and Australian Rugby.

“I feel like I have a couple of good years left in me so we’ll see what happens.”

Slipper was unsure whether he will retain the Wallabies captaincy as Eddie Jones makes his mark on the team.

Jones has earmarked the potential of multiple skippers, with Slipper one of three Wallabies captains in 2022 along with Hooper and Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa.

“Eddie made it clear he’s going to pick the right man for the job so whoever that is, we’ll get behind

“It’s not a thing I’m striving to be, it’s just about whoever is (the) right man for the job.”

Slipper's focus remains on the Brumbies as they hunt for the Super Rugby title.

They currently sit second on the ladder despite a defeat to the Hurricanes last week.

With a clash against the Chiefs still to come, Stephen Larkham's men will likely have to win out to maintain their spot in the top two heading into the finals.

“It was tough. The result was disappointing but we’ve got a long turnaround and learnt a lot from the game,” Slipper said on last week's result.

“We’re happy to be back in Canberra and gearing up for a big game this weekend

“We thought it was a good fight by the boys to hang in there until the end. The result was obviously disappointing but to come away with something, that’s a positive. but we’re overall disappointed.

“We’re going to work hard this week and try and get better.”
