ACT Brumbies hooker Lachlan Lonergan is ready to make up for lost time after a horrific leg injury curtailed his Super Rugby season.

Lonergan’s 2024 was cut short after a horrific leg injury during a one-point win over the Reds in March.

The hooker broke his leg in an awkward hip drop tackle that left onlookers panicked amid the obvious fracture.

Lonergan has been fully training with the ACT Brumbies for the past three weeks as he ticks off the final steps of his recovery.

“It's pretty obvious when it happened…It was more just a bit of shock,” he said on his reaction.

“I was fortunate all the doctors and whatnot were just on the sideline right where I was but the sad thing is in sport this will happen.

“I've had a pretty good run so far in my career (with injuries). Hopefully, it doesn't happen again and I'm at the pointy end (or recovery) and just looking back to play some footy.”

Lonergan has found himself in and out of the Wallabies squad, last pulling on the gold jersey in 2022 on the Spring Tour.

It was a memorable tour for the 25-year-old, proving the hero as he scored the game-sealing try to take down Wales in an epic comeback victory.

Almost two years on from that day, Lonergan is hopeful of pushing his case for an overseas call-up as part of the extended Australian training squad in Canberra under the guise of Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt.

Lonergan was impressed with what Schmidt had brought to the squad in his first impressions of life under the new coach.

“The boys say he's a hard coach, which is as expected. I think he's getting the best out of the boys, which is what all Australian supporters want to see, and players,” he said.

“He’s big on nailing your basics. He doesn't want to see anything fancy, which is what you want as a player is you just need to nail your basics and all the fancy stuff comes off the back of that.”
