Melbourne Rebels Super W Head Coach Jason Rogers has today officially unveiled his 32-women squad for the upcoming Buildcorp Super W season, which is set to kick off on Saturday, March 25.
This year's squad welcomes back a number of last year’s heroes including Wallaroos World Cup star Ash Marsters, the experienced Janita Kareta, Meretiana Robinson, Norma Fuaiva’a, Sarah Hogan and Utumalefata To'omalatai Atonio Eli.
Emerging Victorian stars Jade Te Aute and Laiema Bosenavulagi have also been named, and are both set for big 2023 campaigns following their impressive pre-seasons.
The Rebels will compliment this Super W experience by injecting an exciting batch of youth, physicality and flair, headlined by the inclusion of New Zealand born, Kerri Johnson, who starred during last weekend’s comprehensive win over the ACT Brumbies in Wagga Wagga.
The explosive wing boasts an outstanding pedigree, having grown up under the close watch of her talented Aunty, Black Ferns star, Portia Woodman-Wickliffe.
Johnson will be joined Vika Matururgu, Jiowana Sauto, Asipau Mafi, Easter Savelio, Sheniqua Taula, Chanelle Kohika Skipper and Wasi Toolis, who is the partner of Rebels Super Rugby backrower, Tuaina Taii Tualima.
The Rebels Super W program will head into next month’s season opener carrying a wave of confidence following Saturday’s 24-point win at McDonalds Stadium.
Rebels Super W Head Coach, Jason Rogers, was excited to reveal this year’s squad to Rebels’ fans.
“We’ve got a few new faces in our squad this year and a few players who have been with the Rebels for a number of years now,” said Rogers.
“There is a genuine excitement in the team to play against some of the best rugby players in Australia and Fiji. Our team understands the challenge that is ahead. The team is grateful to be given the opportunity to play rugby on a national stage and represent those players from Melbourne, our clubs and our state, and put our best efforts forward.
“We are part of the One Rebels Family, which we value and love. We did some identity work with our team, trying to determine who we are as a group within our Rebels family for 2023.
“The players determined as a team that they wanted to be free, to play the game of rugby that they love. To be empowered and supported as they inspire the next generation of rugby players in Victoria, through dedication, sacrifice and pride. As coaches we are excited to enable this belief. We look forward to season 2023.”
