Scrumhalf Tate McDermott and backrower Liam Wright can't wait to test themselves against a world class French outfit.

The Crusaders have opted to rest a host of stars ahead of Friday's clash with the Western Force.

All Blacks flyhalf Richie Mo'unga headlines the list of players sidelined for their final game at home.

He is joined by George Bower, Sam Whitelock and Sevu Reece, with the defending champions still needing two bonus-points wins to stay in touch with the top two.

Tamaiti Williams, Manasa Mataele and Fergus Burke come into the starting side, with David Havili returning to the centres after he was rested during last week's win over the Waratahs.

Mitchell Dunshea start at lock alongside Scott Barrett as Quinten Strange recovers from a neck injury whilst Isileli Tu'ungafasi, Tom Sanders, and Josh McKay have been added to the bench.

"Those guys have trained extremely hard, and they're deserving of their opportunity this week, so it's great to see the energy and excitement building towards this game," coach Scott Robertson said on the changes.

"We know we need to perform, and we want to do so for the people of our region who have been going through a tough time this past week. The team we've selected is ready to do that."

Meanwhile, Tim Sampson has handed 20-year-old Ollie Callan his starting debut, slotting in at number eight.

This pushes Tim Anstee to the bench and Brynard Stander out of the team.

“It’s great for a local lad who has come through our pathway to get an opportunity to debut as a run-on player against the Crusaders. He brings a lot of energy and he has no fear,” Sampson said.

“We’ll be looking for physicality, that’s the type of response we need on both sides of the ball. We need to be more aggressive.”

Sampson has also been forced into changing his fullback with Rob Kearney sidelined with a concussion.

He is replaced by Jake Strachan, who started for the Force during the Qualifying Final loss to the Brumbies.

Meanwhile, stalwart Ian Prior will bring up 100 Super Rugby games, with the halfback named on the bench.
